If you are new to the world of infertility or even a tenured pro, all the acronyms can be overwhelming at times! I know when I first started fertility treatments and joined support groups, I was Googling constantly! In an effort to help some other people attempting to decipher the secret code of fertility acronyms, here are some helpful tips!
Basics:
TTC- trying to conceive
ex: We have been TTC since March 2021.
This is a BIG question that is important to your medical team and always part of sharing your story in support groups. Know though that just because your length may be short, it doesn't mean your struggle is less valid.
TWW or 2WW- two week wait
Ex: I'm in my TWW right now and losing my mind!
If you have ever TTC, then you know the dreadful TWW! That time between ovulation and finding out if you are pregnant or not. For me, I always need some extra TLC during the TWW!
HPT- home pregnancy test
Ex: I bought my HPT at CVS.
There are differences between HPT and pregnancy tests done at a doctor's office, especially with blood work. Blood work gives quantifiable data. HPT can somewhat do this with how dark or faint the lines are, but are still good options as you can do them yourself. Beware of the HPT though! Many women get stuck in that cycle of obsessive testing and that can have negative effects on your mental health.
BFP- big fat positive
Ex: I got a BFP today!
Why the "positive" has to be big and fat, I am not sure, but it's the lingo used. Positive pregnancy tests are a BIG deal though! This positive is in reference to a HPT. Bloodwork done is usually referred to as a "beta test" and the term "positive beta" would apply.
BFN- big fat negative
Ex: I got another BFN. Send ice cream.
I definitely get why the "negative" is called big and fat. It's stark whiteness is a slap in the face every time.
AF- Aunt Flo (period)
Ex: AF started yesterday. Also send ice cream.
I don't know why someone decided to come up with this cutsie name to define a woman's "monthly visitor," but it's the acronym that has stuck in many discussion boards. I can certainly think of many other nicknames I'd give it! LOL
While there are MANY other coded terms out there, here are a few to help you get started. I'll share more in the future so in the words of Tigger, "TTFN- ta ta for now!"
