Relating to Rhinos

I recently visited San Diego for a family wedding. It was my first time on the west coast and the top item on my “things I want to do” list was go to the San Diego Zoo. I remember hearing about it when I was really young on The Price is Right as a showcase showdown prize and have wanted to visit this world famous zoo ever since! I was NOT disappointed! Both the zoo and safari park were wonderful. While at the safari park, I learned something fascinating about rhinos that hit close to home and I wanted to share it with you for Fertility Friday.

In the following article, you will learn about “Edward” and the amazing reproductive studies they are doing with rhinos.

While my husband and I were in the safari car, we passed the 3 juvenile rhinos. The tour guide began talking about their cutting edge discoveries and how Edward was the first rhino ever conceived and born through artificial insemination. Not only did this lead me to buy a stuffed rhino and name him Edward, but it led me to do some research and discover this article.

Maybe some of you can relate, but a lot of the terms or procedures shared in this article, I have experienced myself! Though both mammals, humans and rhinos are clearly very different, yet similar techniques and scientific studies are taking place. If stem cells are able to be turned into sex cells with rhinos, imagine what that could mean for so many species, including people! Science is so cool! I can’t wait to see what the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center does next!

A fascinating story! So nice to hear about scientists who care and are pursuing further research with reproductive studies at this center. Who knows what the future might hold!
